Salve to Host First Ever TEDx Event

By Marrissa Ballard | Managing Editor

The first ever TEDx event, TEDxSalveReginaU, will take place in Fall 2016. The event planning was spear-headed by Araz Khajarian, a sophomore Global Studies major. Khajarian is now asking for other students to help plan the event.

Most students have probably heard of TED and even watched a few TED talks. The premise of the TEDx event similar; the university will host several speakers who are working on unique and contemporary issues, theories, or technologies. The TEDx planning committee will be responsible for contacting and booking the speakers.

Khajarian, who will serve as the head of the planning team, says that she is looking for around 16 or 17 students to become “Team Members.” Team members will handle tasks such as contacting the speakers, designing t-shirts or other promotional materials, and creating posters.

Students who become a part of the team will be expected to attend each meeting, especially since the event will most likely take place early in the fall. “The team members are going to have to be very dedicated,” says Khajarian. “Each student will have a specific task to take care of.”

The students will also be divided into committees which will each handle different aspects of the TEDx event, such as Marketing, Sponsorships, Budgeting, Website Design, Social Media Management, and Public Relations. Khajarian is also looking for a Lead Organizer and Co-Organizer.

If TEDx does not provide a camera crew, Khajarian will also be looking for students who would be willing to film the event. The videos will then be uploaded to the TEDx official YouTube page and website.

Khajarian says she is very excited to organize and hold the event next semester. “It’s very important for Salve to have such an event,” Khajarian explains.

She also believes that the students who join her team will get a lot out of the experience themselves. “If you’re looking for something to put on your CV that shows leadership, organizing the first TEDx event at Salve Regina would be very impressive,” says Khajarian. “The team will also get to meet important people and speakers, and they’ll be able to create relationships with them.”
