Computers all over campus will be registered with the IT Department.
The office of Information Technologies (IT) has a new plan for students to be able to research information on a more efficient and fast working internet this semester.
After students returned from winter break and reconnected their computers, they were asked by the IT department to register their computers through a Computer Registration Program before logging onto any other websites. The Registration Program was set up so that every computer on campus connected to the internet will be monitored by the IT department. “It’s not a way of spying on students,” said Joe Pingitore, Information Security Administrator. “It’s a way for us to monitor the problems occurring that slow down network activity.” The department is trying to get 100% of all the computers on campus registered so that they can examine each computer separately. “The registration is more of way to address the problem with the slow down of the internet,” Pingitore said. “It’s not the answer to the slow down, it’s a tool to identify troubled computers.” Currently, the IT department has taken the registration process off the network so that the people who had trouble registering can still use the internet freely. According to Pingitore, approximately 85% of the computers on campus were able to register successfully. The few people who experienced troubles when trying to register their computer will be assisted by the IT department soon. “We are now working with the staff to get their computers successfully registered, and then we will assist each dorm one by one,” Pingitore said. Pingitore said that residence on campus should experience an improvement with their internet connection this semester. However, the work is still in progress, “right now it’s just trial and error,” Pingitore said. “The registration process will allow the cooperation of residence and our department to work towards a better operating network.”
