SGA Update 4/25/16

Salve Regina University’s Student Government Association had a Senate Meeting on March 15th, 2016 in Ochre Court to discuss ways to better the Salve community. Here are some important things they discussed:

Information Technology

Glenn Clark, Chief Information Security Officer and Senior Director of Information Technology, addressed the Student Government with news from the IT Department. He encouraged students to come forward with any Internet problems they may be having in their dorms. “If we don’t know there are issues, we cannot help you,” says Clark. It is important that students also give feedback to the IT department so they are able to get a good idea of what is working and what isn’t.

As far as service providers, Clark noted that Verizon gets good service on campus and that students qualify for a Verizon discount if they would like to register. IT is still working on getting AT&T service on campus. The process is moving slowly because the IT Department must cooperate with both the Newport Historic and Preservation Society and AT&T itself.

Diversity

Senator Akanji presented some new ideas on behalf of the Diversity Ad-Hoc Committee. “We had a meeting on Friday and discussed writing a letter to facilities about gender-neutral bathrooms,” said Akanji. “We are also thinking about a place to put up mural to highlight diversity.”

St. Patrick’s Day Parade

According to the Safety and Security Committee, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade was a success. There were very few incidents involving Salve Regina students on the day of the parade. The shuttle system also seemed to work nicely bringing students back to campus from the parade.

SGA prepared students for the parade by sponsoring an event “Respecting the Blue While Wearing the Green: What Not to Do if You Get Arrested on St. Patrick’s Day” at which students learned how to have a safe experience at the parade.
