Sherwood’s “Qu”

For anyone missing the summer sun, Sherwood’s “Qu” is sure to brighten the dreariest October day. Pop-rock melodies, catchy choruses and mesmeric vocals mix together seamlessly on the California quintet’s latest album.

Two years since the debut of “A Different Light,” Sherwood delivers their fourth album which mixes their signature surf-pop sounds with more somber lyrics than on previous records. “Qu” creates an enthralling balance that will keep listeners in tune track after track.

Kicking off in perfect harmony on the heartwarming acapella opener “Shelter,” Sherwood sets the feel for the album. “Qu” then streams into the upbeat “Maybe This Time,” featuring the soaring vocals of frontman Nate Henry and the flawless drumbeats of percussionist Joe Greenetz. The album’s third track, the delightfully poppy “Hit the Bottom,” is by far one of the strongest songs on the album, mixing all of the best Sherwood components- exceptional lyrics, balanced harmonies, powerful vocals, and flawless instrumental- into one irresistible power packed track. As the album progresses, it slowly mellows, mixing in more acoustic guitar and delicate piano. “Qu” comes to its most subtle point on the duet “Worn” (ft. Molly Jensen), which features sublime vocals, acoustic guitars and heartbreaking lyrics. Other tracks to listen to are the heartfelt piano ballad “No Better,” and the infectiously energetic “Not Gonna Love.”

“Qu” demonstrates Sherwood’s exceptional talent for tying vocals, lyrics and instrumental together into emotionally charged indie rock gems. The band’s most mature album to date, “Qu’s” emotional honesty shines through every track.

While the weather may suggest summer is over, Sherwood’s “Qu” brings sunshine through the speakers. Breathtaking vocals and heart-melting lyrics combine to create a must have album for any indie-rock fan.

Sherwood is currently on the “Use Your Sole Tour,” opening for Hellogoodbye and Hanson.
