Around the world, stage fright is described as a feeling that performers get in their stomach before going in front of an audience, but at Salve Regina the term is something else entirely. Stagefright is Salve’s theatre club and it is meant for any student to come to learn and enjoy all that theatre has to offer.
Stagefright meets at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays at the Megley Black Box Theatre in Antone. During these meetings, the club plays games that help them warm up their instruments, which is an actor’s voice, mind and body. Some games will have you running around the room or moving in slow motion. Others have you screaming as loud as you can, and one has a master that is charge of others and makes up the rules.
Stagefright however, is not just about the games; E-board Member Zoe Seavey says “Stagefright is a place where you can forget the stress of schoolwork and have fun with peers, and learn and explore all aspects of theatre.”
This year Stagefright, is putting on a One Act Festival that is entirely student run. The two one act plays are Cagebirds by David Campton and Sorry by Timothy Mason. Both of these plays have already been cast, but Stagefright is always looking for people to help with the show in any way possible. Whether with sets, costumes, makeup, sound, there is endless opportunities if you wanted to get involved.
This year, Stagefright is also putting on a cabaret, where students will be able to sing a musical theatre song of their choice, and get a chance to perform it in front of an audience.
It is also not too late to sign up! No skills are required. If you have a song in your heart, and want to share it all you have to do is sign up!
If you want more information on the plays or Cabaret, “like” Stagefright’s page on Facebook and either message them or write a post!
This year, Stagefright is getting together some amazing workshops. Professionals in theatre run all the workshops. They are having a movement workshop and an improvisation workshop.
There is also a rumor that the actor Joey Pantoliano from the Matrix will be doing an acting workshop (how cool is that?).
Even if you are not a theatre major or minor, Stagefright would love to have you. Stagefright is for anyone who has an interest in theatre or who just wants to let loose and have fun! This club welcomes everyone, no questions asked, no previous experience required.
Senior Caitlin FitzGerald joined Stagefright this year and says “ it allows me to come out of my shell and express myself in ways I didn’t know I could.”
Another non-theatre major, a freshman named Megan Gallo, says she loves Stagefright and theatre because the people she meets there are “real.”
If you have any interest in theatre or want to run around a room screaming and have a good time, come join Stagefright! Co – president Kat Witschen says “ Stagefright is about giving students (majors and non majors) an opportunity to get involved in theatre and have opportunities to act and or be a part of the technical aspect, without being on the main stage.”
Stagefright is about coming together and exploring all theatre has to offer. We hope to see you there!
