STAND is Salve Regina University’s Student Anti-Genocide Coalition and is in association with the national organization. According to the organization’s website, standnow.org, the meaning of STAND was “Students Taking Action Now: Darfur,” but the meaning has dissappeared as the organization goes beyond just Darfur.

This club on campus gives students the opportunity to fight for their global community as they work towards one luminous goal: a better quality of life for all of humanity.

Soon-to-be graduate and President of STAND, Brett Dixon has his hands quite full this academic year. Not only does his job description include being the representative of the university’s chapter, but it also entails organizing events and working with other officers and members towards STAND’s cause.

When asked what makes “STAND” stand out among other clubs on campus, Dixon said, “Presently, we live in a chaotic world where freedom and human rights are so often overlooked and smothered by the forces of both greed and hatred. STAND allows students to be a part of something that works to create that global community.”

STAND’s overall mission is to both globally raise awareness and provide aid in order to further prevent genocide and other horrid human rights violations.

STAND is also working to raise money in order to sponsor a Sudanese child, in order to provide him or her with food, clothing and a form of education.

“The more well known STAND becomes, the more we can accomplish,” Dixon said.

This semester, STAND plans on hosting a movie night on campus, in which the club would like to show the film, “Hotel Rwanda.”

The club meets Tuesday nights in Wakehurst.
