Steelers Robbed Championship from Cardinals’ Nest

Millions of Americans every year watch the Superbowl and host “football championship parties.” Party goers take sides either rooting for the sure win or the underdog. Some may just watch the game for the sake of the commercials and attend the party to just eat all the buffalo wings and chips and dips he or she can get his or her hands on. For me, my team did not even make the big game, so where did that leave me?

Usually I don’t care who wins the game unless my home team, the New England Patriots, makes it to the big game. This year’s Superbowl was shaping up the same way. I didn’t plan on watching the game. I planned on maybe watching the commercials and doing homework during the game itself.

Things changed and I watched the game with my roommates and it turned out to be an enjoyable game. I found myself pulling for the Arizona Cardinals to win. Usually if the team I follow doesn’t make the playoffs, in the championship game, I find myself rooting for the team that came from the same division, but I could not bring myself to root for the Pittsburgh Steelers, the AFC winner. I did not want to see them make history for having the most Superbowl wins in history. So I chose to root for the underdogs, first time Superbowl appearing team, the Cardinals.

Even rooting for the Cardinals seemed odd because of their regular season standing. The New England Patriots beat them in the regular season 44-7. I have no doubt in my mind if things were different and the Patriots made it to the Superbowl and played against the Cardinals, the Pats would have destroyed them yet again; but the Patriots weren’t in Tampa this past Sunday, so I just had to deal.

The commercials also failed in comparison to the game. Most bored my roommates and me while a few deemed themselves worthy of a few chuckles. The “GoDaddy.com” commercials were pointless and filled with unnecessary innuendos. The Doritos commercial in which an employee said he could see into the future and predicted free Doritos in the office that day and then proceeded to through his crystal ball in the vending machine, was one of the funnier advertisements of the night.

The game proved exciting nonetheless and right away from Arizona’s challenged on Pittsburgh’s first touchdown, I knew this game would be settled in the final seconds of play. That always seems to be the case; the final minute of the fourth quarter is always the deal breaker. In this minute the winning team will either lose or secure the victory for themselves based on sloppiness or unity. And that’s what happened to Arizona when Pittsburgh’s Santonio Holmes caught the game-winning touchdown pass with little time left on the clock.

Even though the Cardinals could not stop the Steelers from winning their sixth Superbowl, the Cardinals put up a valiant effort.
