Super Bowl LII Commercials

By Kerry Hayes | Staff Writer

The Super Bowl may have been last week, but everyone seems to still be talking about the best part of the night: the commercials. While it was an exciting game, and Justin Timberlake gave an amazing performance (despite the lack of an NYSNC* reunion), the commercials remain the center of media attention for much longer than the ending score. So here is my list of the most memorable Super Bowl LII commercials!

a. As the newest member of the Game of Thrones fan club, I can assure all you readers out there that the Doritos and Mountain Dew, “Doritos Blaze vs. Mountain Dew Ice” did not disappoint. It was one of the first commercials to be shown throughout the night and set the scene for what kind of commercials viewers would be seeing throughput the night. The commercial was perfectly cast with Peter Dinklage, to provide myself and others with a Game of Thrones fix, and Morgan Freeman spitting rhymes of Busta Rhymes and Missy Elliott. Well done!

a. Tide could have gone a lot of ways with its Super Bowl commercial given the controversy surrounding its products recently. Through a spoof of what can be considered a “typical” Super Bowl commercial, whether that be a cool car commercial or a hilarious beer commercial, Tide explained that as long as clean clothes washed with Tide products are present, it’s going to be a Tide ad. So, does that mean that all Super Bowl commercials are Tide ads? Tide did a great job of spoofing the generic Super Bowl commercials while at the same time tying them all back into the effectiveness of using Tide brand products over the generic brand.

a. Danny DeVito is the human equivalent of the red M&M and this was the role he was born to play.

a. Why is this a T-Mobile ad? I mean sure, it’s an important message, it is relevant to current societal concerns, and the babies are cute, but I’m just not seeing the connection to a phone plan?

a. In general I have always found Amazon’s “Alexa” a little creepy and Big Brother-ish, and the Amazon, “Alexa loses Her Voice” ad, which featured cameos by Rebel Wilson, Cadi B, and Gordon Ramsey to name a few, made my slight fear of the Amazon product a little worse. Overall it was pretty funny and got me thinking “What if I was Alexa for a day?”

a. Pringles, “Wow” ad really missed the ball on this one by featuring Bill Hader rather than Owen Wilson.

a. I wish that Keegan-Michael Key would pop into my life every time I needed something explained to me. Good job, Rocket Mortgage, good job.

a. Am I the only one who was SUPER confused when they found out that the Dundee commercial was just an ad for tourism in Australia?

a. There were a few commercials throughout Super Bowl LII highlighting the 2018 Winter Olympics (which officially opened in Pyeong Chand, South Korea on February 9th), but none were as memorable as this one by NBC Sports, which highlighted the incredible comeback story of Olympic medalist alpine skier, Lindsey Vonn. This girl IS on fire, so be sure to watch out for her in Pyeong Chang in the next couple of weeks!

a. No matter what the end score of the game was (and as a Patriots fan, I beg all of you readers to not remind me), I think it is fair to say that all football fans can agree that the New York Giants were the real winners of last week’s game. Was it Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr.’s dance moves, the incredible Dirty Dancing inspired lift, or the fact that the New York Giants did so bad this season that made that commercial so funny? You can decide for yourself, but I didn’t think that I needed football players performing Dirty Dancing until now.
