“Vampire Diaries” is a new series on the CW this fall starring Nina Dobrev (Elena), Paul Wesley (Stefan) and Ian Somerhalder (Damon). Based on the series of books by L.J. Smith, the show follows Stefan and Damon Salvatore, two vampire brothers who have returned to the town of Mystic Falls.
Stefan is the good vampire, who like “Twilight’s” main vamp, does not feed off of human blood. He falls in love with Elena, a high school student in Mystic Falls who looks like his old love and is reluctant to live in the way his brother does. Damon, on the other hand, does drink human blood and uses his mind control power to manipulate humans. Damon’s killings, to satisfy both his hunger and amusement, cause a stir in the town. The police seek out to find who’s behind all the attacks. After the first couple of episodes, the audience learns that the police know vampires killed the people and that the town had a history of vampires long ago. Each week’s episode tries to solve the killings while diving further into the complicated relationship between Stefan and Elena. If you’re into vampires, this is the show to watch. The series is not just about a vampire falling in love with a mortal. There is enough mystery surrounding the vampires to keep each episode interesting. With each week comes a new twist in the story. Not only are there vampires in the town, but Elena’s best friend, Bonnie, is a witch just discovering her super abilities. As hinted in the last few episodes, Bonnie has premonitions of a massive event about to hit Mystic Falls. And from the actions of Damon, it’s not going to be pretty. Damon’s reasoning for returning for Mystic Falls has started to unfold. The question looming over the story is, will Stefan be able to stop him in time? If you’re not into vampires, give the show a shot. It has a lot more to offer than just another vampire love story. Take out the supernatural, and you are left with a whole lot of teens and a whole lot of issues. The show is full of drama and action to keep you on your toes from week to week. “Vampire Diaries” is on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. on the CW. Check out past episodes on www.cwtv.com.
