On September 8th, Salve Regina University kicked off the Things for Thursday tradition! Things for Thursdays is run by the Salve Regina office of student activities and they organize and carry out all different types of activities for students. In the past, Things for Thursday’s has sponsored events such as creating fish aquariums, tie dyeing t-shirts and much more. This week, the board of student activities ran and event where students were able to make dry erase boards with their pictures on them.
Greg Garvaes was in charge of taking the pictures. He works for a graphic design company called Party Vision that has been up and running for ten years now. Garvaes says that the company does a lot of events along the lines of graphic design, but the idea for the memo boards was something he had seen at a convention. With college students, it has been a huge hit as it is common for students to hang message boards like these on their dorm room doors. Posing all different ways with new and old friends, the university students really seemed to enjoy this event. Allison Kirwan, sophomore at Salve said she, “had a swell time posing and laughing with friends” while making her board.
Not only were there photo message boards, but outside of Wakehurst was the Spike’s hotdog van. This traveling van is made to look like a dog and the company uses play on words and calls them Spike’s junkyard dogs. Spike himself was there, an English bulldog said by owner David Drake to be the chairman of the company, which began in 1991. The company has franchises in Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, but Salve was very fortunate to get a visit from the company’s only van! Mia Loia, a sophomore who attended the event said, “That was the best hot dog I have ever had in Rhode Island!”
