What to Wear: Business Attire

By Mia Lupo | Fashion Editor –

Lately, I have found myself constantly running around campus wearing a sheath dress and high heels. I dress up for professional occasions several times during the week: it could be for an internship meeting; volunteering at an evening lecture on campus; or attending an after-hours networking event in downtown. It’s important to know how to dress appropriately for your work environment, especially before going on job interviews or networking within your field.

The upcoming Senior Etiquette Dinner for the Class of 2014, hosted by the Student Alumni Association, has outlined that students are expected to wear business attire for the evening:

Gentlemen, this means a dark suit (if you own one) or a jacket, shirt, tie and dress shoes. Ladies, this means a dark business suit (if you own one) or a business dress and business dress shoes. This means NO plunging neck lines, short hem lines, or shoes with extremely high heels.

Let’s be honest: the dress code doesn’t sound like much fun, but it exists to ensure people are extending their professionalism while representing themselves and, more importantly, the organization they work for. If you’re a senior and you’re not quite sure what to wear to the Senior Etiquette Dinner on Tuesday, below are some examples of what to look for.

Even if you’re not attending the Senior Etiquette Dinner, these are good guidelines for women’s business attire.

As an aside, the reality is the strictness of a “business attire” dress code differs across industries. The dress code for a law firm, for example, will greatly differ from the dress code at a fashion public relations firm. However, for the purposes of this article, I will be giving suggestions based on traditional “business attire”
