Walking outside to admire the view of the ocean from a college dorm room or building is not typical in many universities across the country. Well, here at Salve Regina University, that is not the case. With a beautiful campus in the heart of Newport overlooking the water, students have the opportunity to live and learn in this grand location. Typical days consist of attending class from a wide range of possible majors and minors, taking relaxing breaks strolling along the Cliff Walk, and enjoying coffee at the Starbucks on campus.
The Salve Regina University wants to spread the close knit environment of our community through its Instagram page, @salveregina. Starting on Wednesday, October 9th, select students will have the opportunity to showcase their typical day here at Salve. The posts uploaded to the Instagram stories will be called “Seahawk Takeovers”.
Each takeover will showcase one student’s day with their classes, life on campus through extracurriculars, and any other activities the students experience throughout their Wednesday. Prospective students will get an inside look to life on campus. Students already enrolled at Salve will get to see the life of a student who may be in a different major. This may spark interest in different classes or clubs on campus. In the takeovers, the students will showcase not only classes and extracurriculars, but the beauty of our campus along the ocean.
Students on campus are excited to conduct these takeovers and watch their peers through the Instagram story. Sophomore Elementary Education major Gabby Robinson is looking forward to seeing “the diverse selection that the Salve community has to offer in terms of academics and social life and activities.” She is excited to see classes from majors different from the education program. Biochemistry major, Ciara Marro-Wilson, class of ‘22, is looking forward to seeing “different hotspots off-campus, coffee shops, and other places to go around Newport after class.”
Salve Regina’s first Seahawk Takeover was just recently completed by Caroline Duseau. Caroline is a junior Elementary Education major. It was so much fun to follow along Caroline’s jam packed day. She showed the Salve community her education classes all completed on Zoom including Teaching Literacy and Language with Professor Renzulli. For lunch, Caroline highlighted the Panera Bread in downtown Newport for students to venture to in between classes. An interesting part of her takeover was the pool at the Marriott where she is living for her junior year. The Marriott is an option for upperclassmen students due to the reduction in students living on campus due to COVID-19 guidelines. Throughout the day future students, alumni, and current students asked Caroline a series of questions.
“I loved being able to share my day with my community! It was really fun to answer questions and create fun and interactive Instagram stories! I can’t wait to see what other students do with their takeovers,” said Caroline Duseau, class of ’22.
