Women’s Volleyball Win

Shouts of “S-R-Uuuu” sounded throughout the Rodgers Recreation Center last Wednesday night, September 28 as the Seahawks took on Western New England University’s Golden Bears in women’s volleyball.

The lady Seahawks battled to a five-set 3-2 win. It was a tight contest between Salve and their Commonwealth Coast Conference rivals.

Salve’s cheering section in the bleachers was full of excitement.  The crowd wore red shirts in support of Stroke Awareness Night.  Salve’s Spirit Club, ASSIST also attended, cheering in  ‘Salve Superfan’ shirts.

The Bears captured the first set with 25-16 win, but the Seahawks came back and won the second set. Beating several close leads and a 17-17 and 19-19 tie, Salve climbed back up with a 25-21 win.

The third set was just as close as the first and second. New England and Salve were tied 10-10. Seahawks took a close lead over the Bears, 18-16, 20-18 and 22-19. Salve went on to win the third set 25-21.

The fourth set was won by New England in another tight match, 21-25. However, the fifth and final game belonged to Salve as they dominated the competition and won 15-7.  Both teams challenged and fought through the game. The Seahawks came back from several tight scores and were able to power through to a win.

Freshman Emily Barkan, a spectator said, “Salve stayed positive and clearly showed that they work together as a team.”

Freshman Setter, Taylor Violet’s performance stood out as Freshman, Jennifer Duggan and Sophomore, Clare Adams’ performance also stood out in Wednesday night’s game.

Salve came back because of their great defense, evident in the various blocks that defeated New England’s rallies and outstanding offense.

Salve’s women’s volleyball team has their next home game Saturday, October 1 at 2 p.m. against the University of New England.  Their next away game is at Eastern Nazarene on Tuesday, October 4, at 7 p.m.
