Review: Wave Cycle Newport

By: Eilis O’Neil | Staff Writer and PR Coordinator

I would never see myself getting up at 5:15 AM to begin with, let alone for a workout. When I left Wallace Hall, it was still pitch black out, the only light was coming from the worm full moon. To be quite honest, I had no idea what to expect. I was immediately greeted by the class instructor for the 6:00 AM class when I arrived at the studio. I grabbed my spin shoes and headed in.

The dark studio room was lit with LED lights and had great COVID-19 protocols. Walking in, I was greeted by one of the co-owners where I was COVID screened and my temperature was taken. The studio was set up so each bike was sectioned off by plexiglass on both sides and in the front. Each bike was also set up so proper social distancing measures were in place. Every class has only 6 bikes available with the instructor, so the class sizes would not get too crowded and overwhelming. I felt extremely comfortable and safe for my health throughout the duration of my time at Wave Cycle.

The class theme was a hip-hop ride, where the top chart songs and some throwbacks were played. With spin class at Wave, they do each set and exercise by the beat, rather than being set and stone. For a beginner like myself, I was told that I do not have to follow the entire class and can go at my own pace.

Of course, given the hip hop theme for the class, everything was upbeat. My instructor was Chloe, who was so supportive and was consistently giving the class reassurance, making the motivation to finish strong worth the pain and soreness after. It was definitely a challenging workout, but the movements from each song let me become more mentally and physically strong, especially after a difficult semester like this one!

Every Sunday at 12 noon, the week’s classes are released. Each day is filled with different themes and rides along with instructors. It is very easy to accommodate everyone’s schedule, mainly because each class is only 45 minutes long! If you are looking for a new workout routine, definitely try Wave Cycle located on Thames Street!
